ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

We are a small, vibrant and student-centred primary school, nestled in the picturesque heart of the Warburton township. We offer a rich, differentiated and engaging curriculum informed by the Victorian Curriculum and our own student achievement data, built on the foundations of our five school values of Respect, Bravery, Personal Best, Integrity and Strength. The school has a long and spirited history, dating back to 1875. This prolific and deeply interesting history is celebrated and gives us a sense of pride and place.

We have four unique and vibrant classrooms (Prep-1, 2/3, 4/5 and 5/6), each one a connected and friendly learning community. We have a whole school approach to all areas of the curriculum, and believe in a 'Gradual Release of Responsibility' teaching and learning model.

Our whole-school approach to Literacy involves explicit instruction of Reading and Writing strategies through the Reader's Workshop and Writer's Workshop pedagogical models. This is complimented by rigorous phonics and decoding programs, helping all students to develop and build upon their current reading and spelling strategies. Students also use Writer's Notebooks to record and experiment with ideas and skills, and this helps to inform their writing process from planning to publishing.

We value and engage in hands-on Mathematics teaching and learning activities to support students to apply abstract mathematical concepts in concrete, real life ways. The instruction of Mathematics at Warburton Primary School is a combination of the explicit teaching of skills and strategies in 'mini lessons' as whole class or small groups, mixed ability group work, independent work, Maths-based games, and online programs. We assess students in a variety of ways, allowing students to deomstrate their understanding in multiple formats.

We provide targeted intervention for students in need of skill consolidation, including the MacqLit systematic reading intervention program and GRIN (Greater Results in Numeracy). We supplement this with our High Achievers Program (HAP) for students performing 12 months or more above the expected level in various curriculum areas, which endeavours to enrich and add challenge to their learning experience. In addition, we have an evidence-based Tutor Learning program to support students' progress in Maths and English when they require additional support to consolidate a skill learned in class.

Our fun and interactive Specialist subjects include AUSLAN, Physical Education, Art, Music and our award winning Harvest Cafe kitchen garden programme to round out our vibrant curriculum.

We value the voice of our students, with the Junior School Council and Student Media Team being important forums for our classroom ambassadors to provide us with feedback on their learning journey and their school environment - enacting real change.

Our parent community is very active and involved in the school, including within our School Council and the Parents and Friends group. If you are interested in becoming more involved in either a casual or more formal commitment, please get in touch.
